The bodies of three Florida residents, as well as a dog, were recovered Wednesday from an underground cistern in Texas, according to authorities.

They've been identified as 37-year-old Delvys Garcia, 26-year-old Denise Martinez, and 45-year-old Noel Vigil-Benitez.

In a Facebook post, the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office said Garcia, Martinez, and Vigil-Benitez were part of a hunting party and ended up in the cistern at a corn field after one of their dogs fell in, resulting in their deaths.

The sheriff's office said they believe one of them entered the cistern in hopes of rescuing the dog and was followed by two others.

The water level of the cistern was far below the small opening of the cistern, which was at ground level, preventing anyone from escaping from the cistern, resulting in the deaths of 2 males and one female," the post noted.

A fourth person with the group went to his truck to call 911.

The sheriff's office said crews responded to the scene, but fumes and stagnant water, along with what authorities described as the instability of the cistern, "hampered recovery efforts and prevented First Responders from initially climbing into the man-made structure.

After ventilating the cistern and removing the water, their bodies were recovered.

"An autopsy was ordered and the bodies were taken to the medical examiner’s office by a local funeral home. The funeral home also took the dog."

Authorities urged the public to avoid the area as an investigation continues.
